Step-by-step Guide for Pairing your Phonak Hearing Aids to your iPhone for Phone Calls, Remote Control, and Remote Support
Step 1: Preparing for Pairing
- Enable Bluetooth: On your iPhone, navigate to Settings > Bluetooth and toggle it on.
- The settings app on iPhone looks like this:
-
How to Restart Hearing Aids (This is needed for both pairing processes):
- For disposable battery models, open and close the battery door.
- For rechargeable models, place them in the charger for 10 seconds and then remove them. This activates pairing mode for 3 minutes.
Step 2: Pairing for Phone Calls and Media Streaming
- Go into "Settings" and then into the Bluetooth Menu towards the top of the screen
- Restart your Hearing Aids using the steps above.
- In the Bluetooth menu, scroll down to the very bottom and look for your hearing aid under the device list. It may appear as “R-Phonak hearing aid” or a custom name set by your audiologist. The hearing aid will only show after restarting your hearing devices. It may also be listed under "L-Phonak hearing aid" or a custom name set up by your provider.
- Tap the hearing aid name when it appears, and confirm any pairing prompts.
Note: Only one hearing aid needs to be paired for audio to stream to both. You will not see more than one hearing aid show up.
Step 3: Pairing to the myPhonak App
The myPhonak app allows for remote control and support. Follow these steps:
- Download the myPhonak app from the Apple App Store.
- Open the app and ensure your iPhone is connected to the internet and bluetooth is on.
- Follow the prompts until you reach "Pair Device."
- Restart your hearing aids (as described above) to enter pairing mode. This is necessary in order for it to work
- Follow the in-app instructions to pair. Tap “Pair Device” when prompted.
- The app will begin searching for devices.
- Ensure both hearing aids are detected. If only one shows up, restart both devices and try again. Once both are detected, tap the devices.
- It will begin pairing to each device seperately. When prompted, you will be required to click "Pair" once for each ear.
- Once connected, we recommend selecting "Stay Connected" on the next screen to ensure a smoother app experience
After pairing the app, you will see two new Phonak connections in your phone’s Bluetooth menu starting with “LE_”. These connections are for your app to communicate to each aid. They may say “Not Connected.” That is typical as they will automatically connect when the app is opened. Do not remove them unless you are troubleshooting your app connection.
Tips and tricks for a better experience
Call Audio Routing
To ensure all calls automatically route to your hearing aids:
- Open "Settings" and click the search bar at the top
- Type in "Call Audio Routing" and select the option once it appears
- Ensure "Bluetooth Headset" is selected
Alternative: You can also do activate "Call Audio Routing" by doing the following:
- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Call Audio Routing.
- Select Bluetooth Headset.
Voice Isolation
Voice Isolation enhances call clarity for the person on the receiving end of the phone call. Without this feature, the people you are calling will hear a significant amount of background noise, so we recommend turning this on!
This can only be done once on a phone call. However, when you turn it on, it will thankfully stay on. Try calling a friend or family member who will be patient with you while turning this on.:
- During a call, open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner.
- Tap Controls at the top of the screen
- Select Voice Isolation.
Older versions of iOS will say Mic Mode in the top right
