Maintenance

Hearing Aid Maintenance Made Simple
At Wholesale Hearing Direct, we understand the importance of properly maintaining your hearing aids to ensure optimal performance and longevity. While purchasing hearing aids online requires a bit more involvement from you, the maintenance process is incredibly simple and straightforward, and is a major reason we are able to help our patients save thousands of dollars!
Routine Cleaning and Filter Replacement
-
Place hearing aids on a soft surface like a towel before cleaning.
-
Use a brush to remove any wax or debris from the microphone area and sound ports/wax guards. Avoid using water or chemicals.
-
Wipe down the outer surfaces 1-2 times per week with an alcohol prep pad to remove oils and buildup. This quick step takes just seconds.
-
Replace wax filters every 2-3 months by simply popping out the old and inserting new filters. For custom molds, also run a thin filament through the vents.
Doing these simple cleaning tasks regularly can reduce filter replacements to just once every 6 months.
Tips for Proper Care
While cleaning is crucial, there are other important tips for keeping your hearing aids in top shape:
-
Handle them delicately and avoid dropping on hard surfaces
-
Most are water-resistant but avoid immersing unless 100% waterproof
-
Always store in a dry area that's not too hot or cold
-
Keep them free of excess earwax buildup following the tips mentioned earlier
-
Recharge batteries nightly or replace disposables regularly
Minor Tuning and Troubleshooting
Sometimes hearing aids need tuning adjustments or troubleshooting for feedback issues:
-
For feedback (whistling or squealing)
Ensure a snug fit and make sure the hearing aid is fully inserted into the ear, check for cracked tubing/earmolds, adjust volume, and clean wax from receivers/mics.
The receiver wire should be COMPLETELY flat against the ear!
-
Clarity or Volume Issues
Hearing is subjective and may require fine tuning! Our licensed professionals can adjust your hearing aids anywhere in the world for free. However, it takes time to adjust to new devices! Consult our team to determine if this is an out-of-normal experience or if you're just going through the normal adjustment period of hearing amplification
Quick and Easy Repairs
Even with great care, some repairs are inevitable, but we make it easy:
If there is no sound, 99% of the time it will be one of 2 issues
-
1
The wax filter is clogged
-
2
The receiver wire is damaged
-
As long as the maintenance steps mentioned above are followed, the wax filter is changed regularly. However, sometimes you have to change the filters before the 2-3 month mark if some debris finds its way inside the filter. Please try this step before anything! It's usually this!
-
The receiver wires usually need to be changed once every couple years, and is a process you are able to do yourself in usually 2-3 minutes. Call one of our licensed hearing care providers and if we determine the receiver wire could be the culprit, we’ll expedite shipping of a new wire and send an instructional video showing you just how easy it is to swap out!
